Another way of seeing this, other than the dramatic reduction to both lines alone:Look at the distant vertical line, notice that the top segment looks about 1/3 the forward line’s length. Hence, the three segments must add to the forward line’s length.
this illusion is simple, it’s part of the art basic that an artist gets to know. it has to do with perspective, things that look far appear small and things that are close appear big.the illusion is that the two straight lines are at a different distance yet they were drawn with the same height
